There is no common method of Skanda Shasti fasting. People usually observe partial or full fast on each Sashti day that comes after the new moon and recite songs of lord murugan. Sashti virathm is to appease Lord Murugan. For the monthly Shasti Vritham fasting is observed on the sixth day after the new moon day (i.e after amavasai).
Sashti, sixth day falls on the sixth day after the of the full moon and the sixth day of the new moon in the Hindu calendar.
